What makes you happy? Happiness Happens Month is a whole month dedicated to celebrating what makes you happy. The holiday is based on the premise that happiness is unlimited and contagious and that sharing one’s happiness and can bring a lot of joy in other people’s lives.

Even though Happiness Happens Month sounds silly, it does have a very important purpose. “The month reminds us that happiness happens one small moment at a time and it’s our job to recognize those moments when they happen. It reminds us that sometimes a small action boosts our happiness. It reminds us that happiness is a personal experience and it’s also contagious!”

The History of Happiness Happens Month

Pamela Gail Johnson is the Founder of The Secret Society of Happy People (SOHP) and is quoted as saying “I started the Secret Society of Happy People in 1998 to provide a missing voice for those who are happy and want to express it without having other people rain on their parade. (Boo, Hiss!)”.

The Secret Society of Happy People started celebrating happiness with Admit You’re Happy Day on August 8, 1999. But their members wanted to let the happy feeling linger a little longer, so in 2000 they expanded the celebration to the entire month of August. Eventually the month was renamed Happiness Happens Day and Month.

How to Celebrate Happiness Happens Month

Happiness Happens Day encourages people to take stock of their lives and try to do and think about things that make them happy and to share this joy with others. Here are some ways to celebrate this happy day:
Do something nice for yourself – after all, happiness starts at home. Make someone else happy by doing something nice for them. It can be something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus to someone else or a more elaborate gesture like volunteering your time and money to a charity of your choice.

Studies have found that volunteering doesn’t only help people bring joy in their lives but can also help them live longer. Don a pair of silver shades (because happy people always see the silver lining), laugh (laughter is still the best medicine), smile (and the world smiles with you). The Secret Society of Happy People are having a 31 Days ~ 31 Happiness Challenges. Every day there will be a different happy challenge. S’mores Day 2021

Graham crackers, melted chocolate and sticky toasted marshmallows, all in one little sandwich—if that doesn’t get you licking your chops, what does? S’mores are the one of the most popular North American desserts and practically the quintessential campfire treat. Never tried them? Then S’mores Day is the day for you! And even if you have tried them, there is no reason to pass up the opportunity to enjoy them again!

History of S’mores Day

S’more is the contraction of the phrase “some more”, which is not strange considering how tasty they are. The first S’more recipe can be found in a book of recipes published by the Campfire Marshmallows company in the early 1920s, which also tells us that the treat had already been popular with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for some time. In 1968 the following recipe was provided: place a square of milk chocolate on a graham cracker, toast a marshmallow and put on top of the chocolate, then a second graham cracker on top of the toasted marshmallow and squeeze and you will want “s’more”. In answer to accusations that s’mores are extremely high in sugar and fat and are not particularly healthy for children or adults, the Outing Activities and Winter Sports Guide stated simply: “Camping trips are supposed to be fun. Why not relax, enjoy yourself, and have s’more?”

S’mores Day was created several years ago to celebrate this gooey delight, and is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

How to celebrate S’mores Day

What could be a better way to celebrate S’mores Day than enjoying this sweet treat? As always, it’s better to make your own, and S’mores are incredibly simple to make. Of course it would be best to make them around a campfire in the woods while telling ghost stories like the treat’s creators did almost 100 years ago, so if you’re planning a camping trip in the near future, maybe leave making s’mores for then.

If you’re not going to be camping anytime soon, however, there’s no reason you shouldn’t make some s’mores in the comfort of your own home. You could even roast the marshmallows over the flames of your gas stove or a candle, if all else fails and you want fire-roasted marshmallows!

Ingredients:

• 32 miniature graham crackers or 8 regular size graham crackers, broken in 1/2
• 2 milk chocolate bars, the kind that can be broken into squares
• 8 marshmallows

Directions:

• Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 
• Lay 1/2 of the graham crackers on a cookie sheet. Top with chocolate pieces to cover.
• Use kitchen scissors to snip the marshmallows in 1/2 horizontally if using miniature crackers and place 1/2 a marshmallow on top of each graham cracker. If using regular size crackers use a whole marshmallow. 
• Bake until the marshmallows are puffed and golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes.
• Remove from the oven and top with the remaining graham crackers, pressing down slightly to make a sandwich.
• Serve immediately, while still warm.

If you’re making your s’mores by a real campfire, you can roast the marshmallows of the flames first and then put them on the crackers, add a piece of chocolate and top with another cracker. It’s important to use chocolate that melts well from the heat of the marshmallow, so a milk chocolate is likely to be the best choice thanks to its high cocoa butter content.

Sarcoma Awareness Month 2021

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

During the 1600’s there was a plague that crossed through northern China and killed off large portions of the chicken population. Out of desperation (and a love of orange chicken), the people there had to find new meats to use in their orange chicken dish. Beef was the most common, but just about any form of meat could be used to make this coveted dish. Of course, the people in southern China had no trouble at all, as their chickens were unaffected.

The best way to celebrate Orange Chicken Day is to head out into the world, find your favorite Chinese restaurant, and order up a big dish of orange chicken. They tend to serve large portions, however, so why not bring a few friends with you to help demolish the dish?

If you’re feeling truly adventurous you can try to make your own dish of orange chicken. There are a few places you can find a recipe, and if you’re fortunate a relative who’s been making it for years will be your best source. Don’t forget to get a heaping side of rice to go with it, and spring rolls have always gone well with it! Indulge yourself, there’s little in the world as wonderful as this dish!
